Internet Week New York’s party scene off to a test

It was an event that the Silicon Alley Insider’s Dan Frommer described as “two thousand sweaty dudes in a room in (the Brooklyn neighborhood) Williamsburg, paying $6 a beer to watch Digg founder Kevin Rose and sidekick Alex Albrecht perform ‘Diggnation’ live.” There were also a few announcements: sister company Revision3 Networks has picked up the popular video show Epic Fu, and New York is officially Digg’s biggest market with over a million visitors a month.

NEW YORK–Predatory women of the Samantha Jones variety would’ve done well to hightail it to Brooklyn on Wednesday night. Social news site Digg took over the massive Studio B nightclub for an Internet Week New York party and live taping of the Diggnation video podcast, and the place was filled almost exclusively with men under the age of 30. There were more getting turned away at the door. Ladies, I’m sure they could’ve used some hugs.

While it’s geared toward the “dude” market that Digg has captured, Thrillist managed to pack its party with a far more mixed-gender crowd. Good show, fellows, good show.

Kevin Rose was also completely hounded by fanboys with cameras after the Diggnation taping, something usually reserved for female tech celebrities. He retreated to a back room where he was spotted among digerati buddies like wine guru Gary Vaynerchuk, who was reportedly behind the presence of several bottles of Diggnation-branded wine.

(Side note: Maybe that’s why it’s so infamously hard to find single men in New York. They’re all sitting at their laptops hitting the Digg button on every story about the
iPhone they can find.)

Earlier that night I’d stopped by the Hiro Ballroom nightclub for another Internet Week soiree thrown by newsletter start-up Thrillist, which has the kind of wild-party reputation in New York that Yelp does in San Francisco. There was a ’90s-vintage “Information Superparty” theme, which meant that everyone got to bounce around to “Gettin’ Jiggy With It” and “Steal My Sunshine” while a VJ mixed visual accompaniments of Lewinsky-era Bill Clinton and Web 1.0 AOL IM conversations. (There’s a backstory to the AOL homages: Thrillist co-founder Ben Lerer is the son of former AOL exec Ken Lerer, and the start-up is part of the Pilot Group, the investment firm run by ex-AOL president Bob Pittman.)

Bill Gates on the future of journalism and more

And if you really can’t get enough, you can watch my video interview or listen to Wednesday’s podcast, in which I discuss Gates’ speech with News.com’s Charlie Cooper. Then you should really get outside, get some fresh air. It’s a beautiful day (well, at least here in San Francisco).

As promised, I’ve posted a pretty complete transcript of my interview on Tuesday with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

As noted earlier, some of his most interesting comments dealt with Yahoo as well as the natural interface options that are planned for Windows 7.

“I hope that readers will be willing to pay subscriptions or watch ads or things that will keep the high quality and breadth of journalism alive and (make it) even better than it is today,” Gates said. “In some ways, we have better journalism today… (With) in-depth, certain kinds of journalism…there’s still a question of how that gets funded.”

But I was also intrigued by some of his other answers, including something that hits close to home–the future of journalism.

Games meet dentistry with the PediSedate

Sometimes we hear about gadgets that are made for good but could definitely be used for evil. Take the PediSedate, a combo gaming device and sedation machine.

No word whether a DSi version might be in the works to update the idea, but we wouldn’t doubt it. The PediSedate is not exactly brand new, but we’ve apparently been anesthetized, so we’re wondering if any of our readers have ever come across one.

PediSedate)

It’s essentially a Game Boy system modified to distract kids ages 3 to 9 with Tetris or something while they’re pumped full of nitrous oxide to knock them unconscious for dental surgery. Sounds evil, even though it’s intended to make things easier on the kid.

But that’s not all it does. The colorful headset includes systems to monitor the patient, such as a pulse-oximeter to slightly adjust the flow of gas in real time, meaning it’s safer for the kid than just raw gas.

Boston-area anesthesiologist Dr. Geoffrey Hart, the company’s founder, received grants totaling $1.8 million from the NIH and the Albert Einstein Society to make his vision into a product. New England product design company Design Continuum delivered prototypes.

Microsoft’s first iPhone app–Tellme

McCue, who sports a 20th anniversary
Mac on his desk and praises Apple for its design, has made it clear he wants to be wherever the mobile customers are.

To switch a song on the iPhone, he noted, takes six clicks on the iPhone.

Microsoft hasn’t committed to any iPhone apps. However, if I was a betting woman, I would put my money on something coming from Microsoft’s Tellme unit.

Tellme CEO-turned-Microsoft executive Mike McCue has been spending a lot of time these days integrating his voice search technology with Windows Mobile. However, Tellme has also continued to work with Microsoft’s rivals in the cell phone business. In fact, Tellme’s latest software was released first for the BlackBerry.

“We want to be on every phone possible,” he said in an interview earlier this year.

Tellme is the speech recognition company that Microsoft bought last year. Among its many products is one that lets you speak a search term into a phone and get back a screen with information–say the location of the nearest gas station or pizza parlor.

“Changing tunes on your iPhone is a dangerous experience,” he said.

He also noted that while the
iPhone is seen as the be-all and end-all of mobile gadgets, it is actually fairly cumbersome and a two-handed job to search for local listings. No matter how great a touch screen is, he says, saying what you are looking for, if done right, can be much faster.

“We want to make Windows Mobile better,” McCue said, but added quickly, “Tellme will be available on all mobile operating systems.”

As elegant as the iPhone is–and McCue gives it lots of credit–what’s really needed, McCue said, is a new interface. Not surprisingly, he sees voice as a big part of the solution.

It’s not surprising, as Microsoft works to catch up to Apple, that McCue’s team has been spending a lot more time lately on mobile applications, working closely with the group developing Windows Mobile 7–the next version of Microsoft’s cell phone operating system.

Citiport Talk to the locals before you go

You can choose the city you’re traveling to and, assuming someone has already added that city, there will be a top 10 list of best places to go based on what fellow travelers have said and what locals say. There are message boards and user profiles from locals so you can ask questions.

Citiport.net is a travel site based on user recommendations from the people who live there.

Citiport says Google doesn’t give specific enough information when searching for travel, but says Citiport will.

The most interesting part is the trip planner, which can be performed all in the same window via a dropdown menu of types of activities (restaurants, beaches, tours, shopping) listed in order by highest rated.

Samsung Knack SCH-U310

Just a day after it launched three low-end cell phones, Samsung extended the basic handset love to Verizon Wireless on Wednesday. The new Samsung Knack, aka the SCH-U310, offers a simple flip-phone design in silver and gray. Features include messaging, voice commands, personal organizer options, a 2.5mm headset jack, and a 65,000-color display. The Knack (we’re scratching our heads at the nickname as well) is $39.99 with service. We’ll have a full review by next week.

After the Carnival Fleet of Foot! Sales Director D

Pei Total: widely disseminated to all currently available audio and video content, now essentially able to receive 4 sets of radio, 6 sets of TV shows, step by step later in the financial, navigation, reading, rich media such as increased hand-held TV added value. It is borne by the manufacturers 3-year tariff, consumers can watch for free, but the digital product market changes quickly, so three years later, can not say specifically, but generally speaking, the trend of the total tariff reduction, or take gifts such as none other specific or widely spread under the policy to be.

Moderator: We note that the Great Wall in addition to CMMB handheld digital television, the first half also introduced the MP3, MP4, MP5, etc. number of new products, how does the Great Wall to meet the digital challenges and fierce competition in the market?

PEI General: Although the World Cup has passed, now we have them fully into the summer promotion, the main benefit is to allow consumers across the board let, with new product introduction, the current activities are being carried out to provide our users be able to buy during this period their favorite digital products.

Moderator: The quiz event for the biggest gain for the Great Wall of what? Great Wall handheld TV market in driving sales effectiveness?

PEI General: The Great Wall of digital joint large bubble nets and IT168 for friends and fans during the World Cup held in the large network quiz activities, the results obtained is beyond the expected, from the activities initiated, the majority of Internet users actively involved in, concerned about was increasing, the activities of the network more than 1.78 million the number of participants, this event is organized by the Great Wall of digital this year’s second major brand marketing campaigns. For the first time this year in April, a joint in the wide spread all over the country’s "100 city and shops tour" activities, the activities of this network is the second large-scale quiz activity a series of events brings the two aspects to the Great Wall is not Philippine harvest, the first is the impact of terminal sales, and the second is from the consumers of the Great Wall brand awareness and product recognition improved.

Moderator: After the World Cup, the Great Wall of digital marketing promotion plan next?

PEI General: The Great Wall of digital into the digital area is relatively new, but also as the Great Wall specialize in digital brand business units set up time is also less than a year later as those who need a lot of places to learn and improve, but to enter the field or from the product Qianqi market research, market timing, product analysis, technical reserves, and other long-term preparations done. Technical reserves in particular, from this event closely linked to CMMB handheld television, we have done 3 years of independent R & D investment and technical reserves, three years, to serve as a strategic partner Guang, mainly for some industries made products, with the CMMB official business, the Great Wall of digital combination of technology and experience of 3 years, also launched handheld TV products and ideas into the digital arena, we believe that, as a domestic independent R & D and technology vendors reserve that is important.

Pei Total: our digital products is a total of three class composition, as well as desktop and handheld tools for these three categories have different product launch in the second half. Handheld TV with one or two new products, e-books in the field to put in more research and development, including the ink color screen and launched new e-book category, the characteristics of the product synthesis: first, the future embodied in the product more cost-effective on Second, we stress the product aimed at the small screen, "pocket" for the big-screen e-book highlights 3G extensions, third, in the second half of the conventional MP4 online launch MID product key.

Moderator: Many users are very concerned about the Great Wall, the new digital plan, can give us about the second half of the new plan?

Sales statistics for the terminal, the terminal during the World Cup more than 200% sales growth for the brand and product awareness, but also because of this event involved more than 170 million users, has been very good communication and I believe We will organize more such activities and consumers interact.

On the other hand, after entering the digital field, CMMB TV is that we focus on developing hand-held direction, the face of market competition, the Great Wall of digital field advantage is a result of the Great Wall brand in IT have a certain influence, but the Great Wall of power in the field to the consumer brand force deep-rooted, so bring the digital extension of the field to give the Great Wall brand had a certain difficulty. But the importance of external resources, the Great Wall of digital integration, the Great Wall TV not only as a hand-held long-term strategic partner in the wide, wide, or in the official designated special gift, I believe, in the continuous inputs and technology to increase, we can ensure that in this emerging field breakthroughs.

20 August before the World Cup held in the Great Wall of digital activities online quiz with prizes award ceremony on August 3, 2010 AM studio recording is completed in bubble net, marking the Great Wall of Digital World Cup Carnival Everything, closes . After the baptism of the World Cup, the Great Wall of digital development in the future what sort of plan? A second router protects adults from kids

Finally, anyone installing a new router should read my earlier posting Defending your router, and your identity, with a password change.

While the main function of a router is to let multiple computers share a single broadband connection to the outside world, it is also invaluable in offering firewall protection. Firewalls that run on your computer have their place, but you are much safer with the additional protection offered by the firewall in a standard, ordinary, consumer-grade router. Previously, I suggested that even someone with only one computer get a router, just for the firewall protection.

If you live in a home where parents/adults have one or more computers, children have their own computer(s), and everyone shares a single Internet connection, then you should consider a second router.

Update. September 27, 2008. For more on this subject, see my follow-up Using a second router: A techie how-to

This networking scheme does not eliminate the need for firewall software in each individual computer.

This approach may also apply to a small business if certain computers do work that is judged to be much more important than others. Here too, the small expense of a second router offers additional protection to the most important computers. Taking this even further, it is not at all unreasonable for a small business to ban an important computer from ever touching the Internet.

Last week, Leo Notenboom, of Ask-Leo.com, wrote about using a second router to protect adults from children sharing the same Local Area Network (LAN) at home (see How do I protect myself from my children? )

*For more on public vs. private IP address, see What does your IP address say about you?
See a summary of all my Defensive Computing postings.

In addition to the firewall, the NAT feature in a router also offers protection. For example, if the kids use private IP addresses* such as 192.168.1.x then the adults can use private IP addresses in the range 192.168.8.x. Assuming everyone uses the default subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (a topic for another day) then the adult computers and the kids’ computers can’t directly talk to each other.

The basic idea that Leo suggests is to put the adult computers in their own LAN, protected by the second router from the LAN segment with the children’s computers. Everyone still shares the single Internet connection.

Leo targets Windows users, and I take it as a given that no mix of defensive software offers perfect protection on a Windows machine. That said, the networking scheme he discusses is applicable and sensible regardless of the operating system running on any single computer. If you are an adult, sharing a network with children, and the health and well-being of your computer is important to you, then investing in a second router makes sense.
